Reflexology for Seniors |
|
The older generation has walked many miles and should be able to enjoy their Golden Years as wise and patient counselors to the younger generations. They ought to be regarded as vital, supportive members of the family; and yet they often end up being treated as the weakest links in the family chain, requiring the support and help of others. What has gone wrong? As we age, the immune system deteriorates and makes us more susceptible to disease. 85% of those over age 65 have at least 3 chronic ailments. They also lack energy and get tired more easily. This lack of vitality and enthusiasm can create a kind of boredom and indifference to the family and the world in general. Consequently, we begin to think of aging as a disease in itself, even though it is a natural process. Disease, strictly speaking, is a disruption of the life process, a condition that interrupts the natural bodily functions. Aging, on the other hand, is part of nature's plan, and even though part of the plan is that the body slows down and becomes weaker, it is not an indication that anything is wrong. We accept that there are different rhythms and energies at different times in our lives, yet when it comes to senior citizens, we look upon these changing rhythms as disease. Reflexology is a natural for senior citizens. It can help them feel better, relieve many aches and pains, provide a way for older couples to continue physical intimacy with each other, and offer them a useful role in maintaining their own health. It is natural because health is a major concern among the older generations. Unfortunately, chronic ailments, operations, hospitalizations and deaths have become the main topic of conversation among seniors' groups. In fact, with many older persons health (or illness) is an obsession. A depressing self-fulfilling cycle emerges in which undue worry over minor aches produces stress that weakens the immune system further, causing older people to be even more susceptible to illnesses. This in turn generates even more worry, sleepless nights, and incessant gossip among friends. The net result merely escalates the concern and worry over disease. What can older people do? They can become a vital force to break up this vicious cycle. They can become healers who can bring new energy and rejuvenation to themselves and their mates as well as to other senior citizens in their communities. Part of the wisdom of old age should be the knowledge of and remedies for staying healthy. By having reflexology done regularly, they can begin to learn the subtle nuances of this ancient healing art and beging practicing on themselves and others. Your feet have carried you along your path, it is now a good time to show your appreciation for all the hard work that they have done for you on your journey through Life. |
