Stress on the Job.......

The pressures which exist in modern day business are leading to unprecedented levels of stress related illness and injury. A number of studies are showing that conditions in the workplace are major contributors to stress. Stress experienced as a result of the job is particularly likely to become chronic because it is such a large part of daily life. In turn, stress reduces an employee's effectiveness by impairing concentration, causing sleeplessness, and increasing the risk for illness, back problems, accidents, and lost time. Work stress can lead to harassment or even violence while on the job. It is estimated that 75% of all illness is stress related!

In this age of downsizing, lack of job security is also a major cause of stress. Additional stressors in the workplace include long hours; time spent away from home and family; office politics and conflicts between workers; wages that are not commensurate with levels of responsibility; and, in our increasingly competitive society, unrelenting and unreasonable demands for performance.

One study done in the UK by the Institute of Management indicates that stress has increased significantly over the past 3 years. It is shown that as many as 270,000 people take time off work each day because of work related stress, reflecting an annual cost to the country of £ 7 billion. Here in the U.S. one company set up a two-year stress management educational program. The savings to the company in workmen's compensation costs were nearly $150,000 compared to the cost of the program which was only $150 per participant for a total of $6,000.

What can Employers do?

Such is the level of concern over lost working days that companies have looked at various ways of tackling the problem. Reflexology and other complementary therapies are increasingly being used to combat work-related stress. Various overseas companies have been addressing this problem for a number of years. Among the many organizations offering Reflexology treatments to their staff: a large supermarket chain, a major city council, a computer firm, a dance company, an oil company, a large chemical multi-national firm, a fire station, a major league football team, a publishing company, along with many schools and hospitals.

The benefits of Reflexology can be made available to your staff in a number of ways, from simply increasing employees' awareness of the benefits of the therapy to providing treatments at work. These treatments may or may not be subsidized by the company.

I will gladly come to your organization and provide an informational presentation and demonstration. After you have decided to make Reflexology a part of your stress management program, we will arrange a schedule to provide your employees with regular availability to this most effective means of reducing stress in the workplace.

Even if you're not ready for regularly scheduled on-site visits, why not try it for special times like Holiday Parties or "Employee Appreciation Week." What a wonderful way to show your employees that you value their presence and that you care about their well-being!
